Born in 1956, Boris Baraz started to learn the cello at the age of 7 at the Special School of Music, Lviv, Ukraine. From 1974 to 1979, he continued his musical studies at the Moscow State Conservatory under the direction of Professor Natalia Chakhovskaya and Mstislav Rostropovich. As a keen chamber musician, he was a soloist at the Moscow Conservatory Ensemble under the direction of Svyatoslav Richter.
On completion of his studies he played with the State Symphony Orchestra and then in 1986, he was invited to join the “Moscow Soloists” under the direction of Yuri Bashmet. As part of the Bashmet’s trio, he toured internationally. He has participated in many International Music festivals partnering with renowned artists such as Oleg Kagan, Natalie Gutman, Pierre Amoyal, Julian Rachlin and Dmitry Sitkovetsky.
From 1994 to 1997, he was the principal cellist at I Fiamminghi Orchestra in Gant, Belgium and then became principal cellist for both the Orchestra “Arturo Toscanini” in Parma, Italy and Opera Flamande, Antwerp, Belgium. Since 1999, Boris has been the principal cellist at the “European Soloists of Luxemburg”.
In the recent years, he was also touring as a guest principal in several orchestras in Europe and America.
In 2005, he was invited as a principal cellist in the “New European Strings” under the direction of Dmitry Sitkovetsky.
Boris Baraz is currently the Guest Principal Cello of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, England.
He is also a professor of cello and chamber music at the Ecole Superieure d’Orchestre de Chambre, France and the Scula de Musica di Fiesole, Florence, Italy.
